Are you an American looking for a not-boring getaway beyond the confines of the contiguous United States, excluding Alaska and Hawaii, without a US passport? Yes, this is a hyper-specific hypothetical, but nonetheless, we have answers for an unexpected and exciting trip.

#1 - Puetro Rico

We're drawn to international travel for the chance to immerse ourselves in a place that feels different than our every day, a place with history and identity wholly unfamiliar—a luxury often elusive for Americans traveling without a passport. But Puerto Rico is a massive exception. Its strong and rich cultural identity forged over 500 years is a fusion of Taíno, Spanish Colonial, and African Influences and can be felt today across every inch of the island.

There’s no denying Puerto Rico has a vibrant energy, but its unbeatable weather, and gorgeous scenery creates an irresistible invitation for travelers to lose themselves in the island’s timeless allure. Here, time can slow down syncing you to the rhythm of crashing waves and swaying palms, allowing you to enter another plan of relaxation.

We love that Puerto Rico is a destination for every type of traveler. Not just the Rum enthusiasts seeking to savor the spirit in its natural habitat—although, why not? Whether you're a nature lover, an Epicurean or a beach bum yearning for unspoiled shores bathed in sunlight, Puerto Rico offers an array of experiences to suit every travel preference. From its pristine beaches to its lush rainforests the island presents a captivating tapestry of natural wonders waiting to be explored. Even as you wander the cobblestone streets of Old San Juan, enchanted by its colonial charm, the allure of Puerto Rico's breathtaking landscapes will linger in your thoughts. We promise you'll be planning your return visit before you've even bid farewell.

#2 - St. Croix

St. Croix is more than just a quick stop on a floating city-size cruise ship. It is the shining gem of the Caribean, waiting to be discovered.

If you're drawn to breathtaking beaches with powdery white sands and waters so clear they seem unreal, look no further—this is your next destination.   But it's not just the postcard-worthy scenery that makes this island a must-visit; it's the vibrant blend of cultures, flavors, and experiences that awaits around every corner. From savoring local delicacies at bustling food markets or some of the region's best restaurants to exploring historic sites or enjoying some of the best diving and snorkeling in the world, St. Croix offers a getaway that seamlessly combines relaxation with adventure.

#3 - Northern Mariana Islands

If you're looking to lean into that "not in Kansas anymore" vibe, the Northern Mariana Islands need to be on your list.  Indeed, this is not a budget vacation. The remoteness of the destination is reflected in the airfare costs to reach it, but if budget isn't a concern, then this may be the destination for you.

The Northern Mariana Islands are a chain of 15 volcanic islands that stretch 55 miles across the Western Pacific Ocean. This warm-weather paradise has endless wind-sand beaches, providing plenty of opportunities to soak up the sun or enjoy outdoor activities. Visit Managaha Isands, a coral islet in Saipan Lagoon, for scuba diving, or take in the breathtaking views from a hike to the top of Mount Tapochau.

Like some of the other destinations on this list, it's not just the painfully beautiful landscapes that make these islands special. Here, you can delve into a rich tapestry of cultural heritage as you explore ancient Chamorro ruins and engage with the warm hospitality of local communities while savoring the tantalizing flavors of Pacific cuisine.

If you're ready to escape the ordinary and embrace a truly out-of-the-box trip, then start looking for flights to Saipan.

#4 - St. Thomas

St. Thomas is the easiest of the US Virgin Islands to reach, with direct flights from many East Coast cities, making it a fantastic option for a passportless, not-boring getaway. It’s also great for families, with a number of hotels and resorts offering kid-friendly activities and the opportunity for parents to unplug.

Like all of the destinations on this list, you can expect white sandy beaches and pristine waters, which allow for lots of relaxation and sun-soaked days. If you’re looking for a luxury getaway, know that  St. Thomas also offers some first-rate accommodations, including the MorningStar Buoy Haus Beach Resort at Frenchman’s Reef as well as the Ritz Carlton.

#5 - Guam

Looking for another far-flung, end-of-the-earth, can’t believe I’m going this far without a passport,  travel experience? Then start Google searching flights for Guam. It’s closer to the US mainland than the Northern Mariana Islands, only 6000 miles from Los Angeles, and there are regular flights from both Hawaii and Asian capitals like Soeul, which make it “easy” to get to. Guam is a tropical paradise filled with gorgeous natural beauty and Golden Beaches with crystalline waters, but it also boasts a fantastic food scene made up of Hawaiian, Filipino, and indigenous Chamarro cuisines, as well as great local BBQ. It’s true there are other gorgeous getaways that are significantly closer and cheaper to reach but would any have you feeling quite as adventurous?
